Headed back to work

Hard to believe that 8 weeks have flown by and it is time for me to return to work.  Frankly I would take longer if Jason weren't at home to hang with him as long as it takes to get him ready for preschool.  He is just not ready yet....but he has come so far in a mere 2 months home.  If we HAD to send him we certainly could figure it out but we are so blessed to have the flexibility that our choices provide.

I have mixed emotions about heading back to work.  On the one hand, I truly miss my team at work.  And I miss the adult interaction and responsibilities of my work.  And the stretching of my brain.  On the other hand, it has been so nice to have the time to spend with Peter and the bigs. And the flexibility to do certain things during the weekdays instead of dealing with bigger crowds on the weekends.  And I know Jason has appreciated the help around the house while we try to settle into our new normal.

So, I will put my big girl pants on tomorrow....unfortunately dress pants instead of sweats......and try to stay warm with these super frigid temperatures.  At least it looks like the air temperature will be above zero tomorrow.

This kid can smile for miles.

And this one can too....but with a little crazier set of awkward teeth.

Peter really likes to do "tickle tickle"......and he likes to try new foods.  We recently learned that he loves tomatoes.

This picture is a little fuzzy but shows a tender moment of the three of them together and Rascal snuggling in too.  I think they were watching Paw Patrol which is becoming a favorite for Peter (and Lillie too).  We were trying to find good alternatives to constant requests for Korean cartoons (either Pororo or Tayo).  Not that we don't want him to watch them but seemed like we should insert an American cartoon into his playlist.

Snuggling in under mom's favorite down blanket......

Our clumsy kid has continued his streak.  Just the other day as I was commenting to Jason about how great of a day Peter was having, he took a major header into the wall in the living room.  Of course he hit the corner with the metal reinforcement and not only had a huge goose egg but also a scrape of his skin.  He was NOT happy about this incident.....and we weren't either.  In addition to feeling terrible for the injury, we will also need someone to come repair the drywall because he did quite a number on the metal reinforcement and left a large divot in the wall. Thankfully an Elmo boo boo buddy cool packet seemed to make him feel better.

There have been many cold days where the kids spent good chunks of the day in their jammies. On this particular day, they were paired with dress up slippers and a show of his tongue.

We were SO lucky to have two days last week with super nice temperatures.  Still had snow on the ground but we took advantage of the nice weather to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.  Lillie scored a Hello Kitty scooter for Christmas and she has been quite anxious to try it out.  We also pulled out the Spiderman big wheel for Peter (having heard that he liked to ride a trike in Korea).  And we played outside while waiting for Paul to get home from school.  Lots of smiles!

A montage of video from their two and three wheeled adventures.  I seriously laughed so hard when Peter turned around instead of turning his big wheel around.  Too darn funny.....at least I know he was listening and understood the words I said, just not the context.  He did actually use the pedals a few times but seemed to gravitate to just pushing with his feet.

And then Paul got home and he scootered a bit too.....all three in a line.  Warms this momma's heart.

Paul got sick AGAIN.  This has been the worst season of health for him since he came home. Since he missed 5 days of school with pneumonia and had a 9 day absence for our first Korea trip, we have been really careful about how much more school he misses.  We already received our truancy notice for the year.  Ugh.  So when he started coughing, we checked for fever and when he was clear he went to school.  The next day was the same although he was clearly feeling a little worse on day 2 because he spent some time resting in the nurse's office and his teacher was SO nice to let him spend first recess in the classroom reading instead of running around outside.  But the evening of day 2, it was clear he was not feeling well and when I took his temp, he was 102.  We made an appointment for the next day and kept him home (bummer because he missed a pajama day in his classroom).  Even when he is sick and sitting in the waiting room, he is still cute as ever.  Doctor didn't think it was anything more than a really bad cold but agreed it was best to bring him in to make sure the pneumonia hadn't resurfaced.

Someone wanted to put Elmo aboobah.....it was too cute.  He walked around like this for a while.

Paul started winter basketball this weekend.  We decided to spend a little more and register him in a different league this time.  After just one practice and game, I am confident we made the right choice.  There were 2 coaches and they worked hard on skills for a good 40 minutes before a 45 minute game.  I was so proud of Paul's concentration.  He stayed focused, had fun and did very well for the first practice and game. He even scored a basket in the game!  I promise to take my nice camera to one of the future games.

We decided to tempt fate and go out for dinner all together after Paul's game (first time at sit down restaurant for dinner).  Paul and I met Jason and the littles and everyone had awesome dinner behavior!  Peter was sporting a Mickey bandaid on his face because he decided to pick the scab from the aforementioned header incident and it bled all over.  It needed to be covered the rest of the day.

I snuck some cute video of Lillie and Peter playing this morning.  I had to fib that I was taking video because otherwise they act weird when they know they are on camera.  There is a lot of play food making around here and the drum is clearly the perfect soup pot.  She also made cake later.  This afternoon Peter has made soup, bulgogi and kimchi in that pot.  Ha!

And finally I will leave you with some still shots from the web-cameras in the kids' rooms. Sometimes when I check in on them it just makes me laugh.

Evidently Peter thought it would be comfy to sleep with his legs crossed.  HA!

Why not put your beach hat on to have a little tablet time?  I do love when they sit close and hang out in someone's bedroom.

And sometimes you lock yourself in your room and climb under a lion.  Right?

And so we move into the next phase of the new normal....the one where mom is gone all day. Hopefully this transition is relatively smooth and everyone gets into their rhythm quickly.  And hopefully this momma's brain will start working again so she doesn't look a fool at work.

Peter takes on the indoor playground - and wins!

We have purposely avoided taking Peter to indoor playgrounds or play places with lots of other kids. This was really two-fold.....we didn't want him to hit or push anyone and we were still having trouble around the house with those behaviors. And we also didn't want him to be overwhelmed. We have hit the 6 weeks home mark and have seen great improvement in the hitting department....so we decided to take a risk and see what happened. I am SO proud to say that he did great and had a wonderful time with Lillie.  We went just after they opened and it wasn't very busy for the first hour or so.

They started their fun by climbing up the tree stairs.

Noona (big sister in Korean and what Peter calls Lillie most of the time) did a great job showing Peter the ropes.  They chose their colors and raced down the slides!

Peter kept bonking his head but it didn't seem to bother him a bit.

Then they moved on to the giant bouncy slide.  It took Peter quite a while to make it up the ladder the first time.  Lots of smiles coming down the slide.

Lillie didn't want to come off the slide because she thought Jason was going to tickle her....ha!

Nothing but smiles!

Sneaking through the toddler play structure.

We moved into the bounce house room with lots of jumping, more slides and plenty of smiles.  He really got the hang of the slides.....

Not having any fun at all.

Climbed up to the top......

.....and then slid right down.....

....and laughed like crazy!

Hey, hey, hey!

Sometimes it takes a little team effort.....

Goofy kids!

What is it about bubbles that all kids seem to like?

We took a quick snack break because nothing is better than popcorn!

We spent about 90 minutes playing and then headed to lunch.  He was great the whole time.  And this just still cracks me up that he likes to hold the handle while we are in the car.  I am not sure how that little arm stretches that far but it does!

It is so nice to see him making progress and having fun while he is doing it.  He put his hands gently on a child but I was standing right there to correct it.  At one point another child sort of hit him and he didn't even react.  He has made such progress in this area in a mere six weeks.

NEWS ALERT - Family of Five Eats Dinner at Sit-Down Restaurant

Hallelujah....we FINALLY ate at a sit-down restaurant with all of our family members in tow. We decided to chance it and the risk paid off.  We ended up at our favorite Asian place and it was a hit.  I still cannot believe how much food we ate! Someone was digging the mandu (big shock).

We had to place a second mandu order because everyone wanted a dumpling or two or three.

She was pretty pumped for HER mandu.....

We all ate twice our weight in food.  We had a quick errand to run after lunch and I caught someone snoozing with his thumb just falling out of his mouth.

We will definitely be headed out again to keep up this great momentum.  We've done some super casual food places but this was pretty exciting to eat in an actual sit-down place.  Sometimes it is the little things that make such a big difference.

Three faces of Peter

His expressions just crack me up.

The rest of winter break

All in all I think we had a pretty good winter break.  Just enough fun stuff mixed in with downtime at home.  Here's a quick recap.

Mommy/Paul trip to the library where he chose a non-fiction book about WWII and two Storm Runners books.

After a few days without ME leaving the house, I needed to get out!  I took the bigs for dinner. This is how we eat miso soup in this family.

Sushi for Lillie (big surprise as it is one of her top 3 favorite foods).

Fried shrimp for Paul.  He wasn't excited about it at all.

Paul lost yet another tooth.....both top fronts are gone.  It happened the day before his 6 month dental checkup.  When we left the dentist, he decided to spend his buck from the tooth fairy on a gourmet sucker.  Irony at its finest.

Lots of coloring happens at the kitchen desk.

Paul had a fun meet up with two friends from school at the indoor playground.  They were all smiles for about two hours.

This is how everyone watches the Rose Parade, right?!?!

There were some non-happy times too....just so we keep this real.....here is the result of a tantrum.  But don't our floor look fabulous?!  SO happy with the flooring we chose.

Paul broke in his new marshmallow shooter from Uncle Dan and crew.  We decided that he could only launch them against the slider in the kitchen so we could more easily keep track of the marshmallows.  (Don't want a cat to eat one).

Here's the marshmallow shooter in action......

Playing with his new magic sand (thanks Zach).

The littles and big daddy!

One of her favorite new Christmas toys.....she made a googly eyed rocket ship.

Goofball in his raccoon hat ready to conquer the world.

Someone really loves his seaweed...with or without rice, it's all the same to him.

A little horsing around in his room with daddy.

Paul was happy to get back to school to see his friends this week.  Lillie is happy to be on her normal routine.  Peter seems pleased to get more undivided attention from us but he does seem to miss the bigs when they are at school.
